In today’s world, many local gathering places, including churches, face potential security threats. While we pray for divine protection, it is crucial to remember that we play a role in safeguarding our communities. By taking proactive security measures, we help create a safe environment where everyone can gather without fear.

In this blog post, I will provide you with practical skills for identifying and avoiding potential threats. These skills are part of the Modern Warrior Project’s comprehensive situational control course. Your first line of defense is recognizing potential threats.

Recognizing Potential Threats

Unusual Situations and Behavior

This isn’t about profiling or jumping to conclusions—it’s about maintaining a heightened awareness of your surroundings. We’re looking for situations that deviate from the norm. So, ponder this: what might seem out of place in your church environment? Here are some key indicators to consider:

  • Unusual Appearance
    • Inappropriate clothing for the setting
    • Concealing style garments
    • Military attire or anti-religious symbolism
  • Unusual Behaviors
    • Loitering near entrances and exits for extended periods
    • Repeatedly circling the building
    • Engaging in unusual or suspicious conversations
  • Unusual Emotions
    • Excessive anger or nervousness
    • A complete lack of visible emotion in situations where it would be expected
    • Large, aggressive groups congregating unusually near entrances or exits

These indicators aren’t meant to accuse anyone. Instead, they serve as cues for us to observe, document, and assess.

“Remember, our goal here isn’t to accuse, but it is to observe and assess.”

Avoidance Techniques

Once you’ve identified a potential threat, the next step is to avoid it effectively. Here are some strategies you can use:

Changing Your Route

If you feel uncomfortable or sense that a situation might be unsafe, simply alter your path. Avoid the area entirely by deviating from your route.

Seeking Assistance

Should you perceive a genuine threat, it’s wise to seek help. Reach out to church security personnel or leadership and inform them of the situation.

Alerting Authorities

In more serious scenarios, do not hesitate to contact law enforcement. Utilize emergency services like 911 if you believe it is necessary.

Proactively identifying threats and employing avoidance strategies are crucial steps in maintaining a secure atmosphere. By combining spiritual vigilance with practical awareness, we create a sanctuary where faith can thrive without fear.

If you found this information useful, take a moment to review and practice these techniques regularly as part of your general church security training.

Remember to Note: Sharing these observations with the appropriate authorities not only helps you manage potential threats but also informs the community of practices they can implement themselves.

Regular Practice in Church Security Training

Just as we prepare for emergencies and natural disasters, practicing these security techniques is essential. Incorporate threat recognition and avoidance drills into your regular training programs. This ensures that everyone involved is well-prepared and capable of taking swift action if the need arises.

A Culture of Vigilance

Creating a culture of vigilance within your church community not only enhances security but builds trust and unity. When everyone is aware and knows what to look for, the entire community becomes a stronger entity against potential threats.

By staying informed and prepared, you can help create a safe space for worship and fellowship. Let us remain vigilant together, supporting one another as we protect the sanctuaries we cherish.
